Reclaiming Your Life As A Motherless Daughter “…Too soon, too sudden, the wrenching apart, that woman’s heartbeat heard ever after from a distance, the loss of that ground-note echoing whenever we are happy, or in despair.” --Transcendental Etude, by Adrienne Rich At GroundNote Counseling the goal of group counseling with motherless daughters is to restore the presence of the "ground- note" in their lives and thus reclaim their lives. Many women who attend this counseling group have never had the proper support to grieve the loss of their mothers. They also frequently have anxiety issues related to approaching the age their mother was at the time of death, emotional intimacy issues, a history of trying to fill the “big void” with drugs and alcohol and promiscuous sexual relationships. If they have children they are worried about the impact of losing their mother on their parenting. They yearn to have a connection with their mother but don’t know how to accomplish that. During the 12 week group counseling program, women have the opportunity to grieve in an empathic and supportive environment. They are actively supported as they research who their mother really was as a fully human woman and examine which characteristics they carry of their mothers and which characteristics they don’t. They examine the life transition issues that occur as a result of losing your mother and discuss how they can manage those transitions without the support of their mother. They explore the “gifts” that come with motherloss and learn to take pride in their strength and independence. They build connections to their mother using incorporation of her traditions, and interests, and explore the possibility of spiritual connections Groups meet on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30. An individual intake appointment is required. Intake appointments may be made by calling 206-227-6294 or e-mailing groundnotecounseling@gmail.com.
